Petite Fashion Challenge #17: Candy Colorized

The Challenge: Candy Colorized
Take a bowl full of colorful candies (M&Ms, Jolly Ranchers, jelly beans, etc.), close your eyes, and draw 2-3 pieces.  Now use those colors (+ a neutral of your choosing) to form the basis for your ensemble.

**Extra brownie points if you post more than 1 colorful ensemble or if you add a DIY element (because I love DIYs so much!) :D**
Hosted by: Sew Petite Gal

I love me some good candy.  Sour Patch Kids are my absolute favorite! but I haven't had any in awhile.  I've been trying some healthy eating, and then this challenge came up. :D It couldn't have come at a better time.  I stopped at Walgreens on my way to work, swooped up a box of sour kids, and proceeded to shake out 2 kids. (Bad idea, sugar everywhere!) but delicious!
This challenge made me nervous, because of the unpredictability, and even more nervous when I got orange and red! but what do you expect from the Sour Patch Kids.  So SOUR at first... but then so SWEET...

phu's chambray and sweet corn salad

Hello hello! :) Thanks for joining and reading the last remix of June (cannot believe it's the end of the month already. Summer is flying by!). I love this chambray shirt. I can pair it with jeans, tights, shorts, etc. I love the light weight feeling of the material and how it kept me cool as I chilled next to the lake with some friends.

chambray shirt: urban outfitters, skirt: h&m, belt and earrings: forever21

shoes: h&m; sunglasses: coach

bracelets: forever21 and h&m (Chicago skyline, I love you!)

When the weather here in Chicago is super nice, my friends and I like to have potlucks on a rooftop to chill, grill, drink and grub. My friend Christina, who we nickname Cray Cray, often makes this sweet corn and basil salad which everyone absolutely loves. Hope you guys like it as much as I do!

fresh sweet corn
fresh chopped basil
finely chopped/minced red onion
apple cider vinegar
olive oil
salt (Cray uses pink Himalayan)
black pepper

boil the corn until cooked (15-20 min),
put corn in ice bath for a few minutes to retain color and to stop cooking
cut the corn off the cob
mix corn, chopped basil, red onion, and all other ingredients
start with a tablespoon or two of both the vinegar and olive oil and season to taste

Thank you Cray for sharing your recipe with me. :)

I hope everyone had a wonderful June. Let's welcome July and the new remixes: peaches and color shorts. :)

Chicken with Cumin, Red Bell Peppers, and Mushrooms & Doodlings

Hello readers!! :) I know it's been awhile since I posted and I swear I haven't been neglecting baby flan. Even though it's been a pretty busy month, I've been trying to eat and cook healthier so here is a dish I cooked the other day:

Chicken with Cumin, Red Bell Peppers and Mushrooms

1 lb of chicken breast, diced
1 tsp cumin
1 tsp chili powder
1/2 tsp salt
2 garlic cloves, mince
1 tbs coconut oil
1 red bell pepper, dice
8 mushrooms, sliced

1. Combine chicken, cumin, chili powder, salt and garlic in medium bowl and mixed until chicken is fully coated.
2. Heat large skillet over medium heat. Add coconut oil.
3. When skillet is hot, add chicken. Stir and brown chicken for about 5-7 mins.
4. Add red bell peppers and mushrooms. Stir and cook until vegetables are tender (about 5 mins).

I wanted to add Kale but I didn't have anymore in the fridge. You can enjoy this dish with rice, over some lettuce or even in a wrap. Hope you enjoy it. :)

So C's side hustle post influenced me in doodling several doodles when I was at work. If you click on the link, you'll see my whale doodle, which I couldn't stop giggling about. Whale u go be awesome.

haha. Have a good weekend everyone! :)

Dear, Summer Sun

I, personally, don't think I'm qualified to post on a fashion blog. So I'm looking at the fashion portion of this FLAN baby as a summer assignment, a personal experiment to develop a sense of style that's laid-back and easy but age-appropriate. I don't want to walk into work one day in a completely new 'fit with people gawking, wondering if I have a date or job interview later. I want to look like me but fANcy. Here's some data I've collected so far:

1. Dresses are an easy go to when you're running late
2. Scarves make things look fancy
3. If all else fails, throw on a belt
4. For easy everyday, pick one or two stand out accessories and keep the rest light
Fresh Corn Salsa con Huevos y Tortilla

I have fond memories of summers with my sister in which I'd wake up, plop myself in front of the tv, and convince myself I wasn't hungry until she got up so that I wouldn't have to cook. Many of her creations consisted of something on top of a fried egg and tortilla. For a while we were on a tuna salad topped with salsa kick. (Don't knock it 'til you try it.) Since then, she has become an even more  impressive cook. So you can imagine my excitement when she came into town for a quick visit last weekend and offered to make me dinner.

At first she was thinking enchiladas. Then she switched to chilaquiles. (She's a pisces, and the most indecisive person I know.) Eventually, she was forced to make the following because I didn't have a can opener. (It's been on my shopping list for about 6mos now.) In the spirit of my haphazard cooking style, she threw this tasty AND HEALTHY meal together using things I already had and things she had picked up for the original meal plan. It was delicious!

Although my summers no longer consist of late mornings and cartoons, it's still my favorite time of year! "Stay you! K.I.T."

Bay Area Hawaiian Arts Gala

This past weekend, the girls and I were crazy busy with our side hustles. Even so, they made time to come support my sister and me at the Bay Area Hawaiian Arts Gala, a fundraiser for Halau O Keikiali'i and the Kaululehua Cultural Center. Thank you so much, female FLAN members, for helping make the event a great success!

I wish we had taken a picture together! Next time, I suppose. Here's one of Phu, and hopefully we'll see more of Roe and her 'fit in a future post. (More pics of the event on my personal blog.)

Corn Cream Soup with Taro Chips

CORN!  I was super excited when we decided corn would be the remix ingredient this month.  I love corn and it marks the start of summer.
I know I eat it every summer non-stop, but when it came down to the wire, I had no idea what I would make.  What does corn go in? corn salsa? corn-on-the-cob? I needed some assistance to think outside of the box.  So I went to my favorite food browsing site: foodgawker, and found this little Corn Cream soup by the Well-Seasoned Cook here.  Once I laid my eyes on it, I was done browsing.  I love corn, I love soup. No brainer.  The only substitution I made was taro chips instead of lotus root slices.  I would've loved the lotus root slices, but none in my local market.  However, taro chips, fantastic substitution.

Taro Chips
All you need is taro root.  Thinly slice.  Heat a small pot of oil on medium heat.  When it is heathed through, drop the slices in for about 4mins on each side.  This will vary depending on how thin/thick your slices are.  When they have lightly browned on each side, fetch them out of the oil, and place on a paper towel to drain.

Thanks for joining me today and happy eating!

Roe's Chambray in New York

Hello!!! I felt like I haven't blogged in ages!! Sorry!  It's been a whirlwind of fun and stress the past two weeks, mostly fun!  End of May I and some other West Coast FLAN members went to visit our East Coast counterparts.  It all happened so fast, I wish I had more time there!

The weather was sunny most days, barely humid, and even breezy some times.  It was perfect weather for my floral shorts and a light layer of chambray.

This chambray shirt is definitely an essential in my wardrobe.  It's lightweight, and in my opinion can be paired with anything!  You all remember this same chambray shirt on D last week.  It's like a chameleon! a chambray chameleon, adapting to any outfit you want to wear :) [blame my wittiness on the late nights and lack of sleep]

Thank you for stopping by and checking out my remix.  Check back later today for my yummy corn recipe :9

Thanks for reading!!

D's Corn Fritters!

June's food remix item: CORN!

Ever since visiting E&O Trading Co in Downtown SF, I've always remembered those crispy sweet corn fritters. It was fate that I saw this beautiful recreation of them on Pinterest.

Roe's birthday part 2 was a pizza making party, BYOT. Bring your own toppings. I decided to make these fritters as an appetizer while the pizzas were baking.
